I was recently asked to list 5 songs on my playlist for Angela Yee’s site, www.teamyee.tv. For most, the challenge is picking JUST five, but for me, five was a lot (I have the tendency of living with a record for a looong time) so, I decided to go with the last couple of records I’ve kept on repeat. You can check out the playlist HERE.
*Shout to @scottamarlowe
As for right now, the song on repeat is Fiona Apple’s Extraordinary Machine
Last night while the Knicks played the Heat and the Oscars played on ABC I went downtown to SOB’s to hear the homie Juan Bago play his hit “Pan Con Queso” and check out Maluca Mala perform her collection of “tropical punk” hits [download her China Food mixtape HERE] all in celebration of La Independencia de la República Dominicana. Shout to R. Nieves and R. Cruz who were also in attendance on behalf of the night’s sponsor PALO, a traditional natural roots and herbs tea from Dominican Republic and Maluca’s #1 Fan Mama Rose who kept it live on the dance floor.
Below are photos and footage from the Event:

Check out Maluca’s first new WEPAsode: Fly on a Budget.

Before I introduced the PROFILE web-series to the internets last year with interviews of Waka Flocka, Jim Jones, and Raekwon I tried the q’s on my buddy Marques Toliver and I have to say his by far is one of my faves.
I originally met Marques while I was taping a show on the streets of Times Square about 4 years ago. He was playing violin and using the sound of the city as a substitute for background vocals. I walked over to him and noticed he was recording his session on a throwback recordable cassette player in hopes of capturing “a unique, raw sound”. We held a brief conversation about his journey to NYC from his hometown, Daytona, Florida, and he invited me to see him busk in Williamsburg sometime and then handed me a cd folded inside a brown paper bag w/ only an email address scribbled across it and told me to take a listen.
I played the cd at home that night and fell in love. His voice is filled with soul and his words are poetic (the kind that is based on reason not rhyme). We kept in contact throughout the years; I would attend his shows around the city witnessing him hypnotize the crowd with his talent and charisma and seen random bloggers, photographers, producers, even musicians lend their platform to showcase Toliver’s talent. Fast-forward to present day Marques has toured with TV on the Radio, performed on BBC’s popular late-night talk show Later with Jools Holland, and even received co-sign from Grammy Award winning UK singer Adele naming him her “NEW FAVOURITE ARTIST” on her blog. Another blog that has taken notice of Marques is Forbes magazine. Last year they featured him on the list of “Names You Need to Know in 2011″ . Marques plans on dropping an album this year and performing around the globe, stay posted on tour dates and projects @ www.marques-toliver.blogspot.com
Talib Kweli is dropping an album next week, Gutter Rainbows, and features labelmate, Jean Grae on a track titled “Uh Oh“. Listen + Download HERE.
With Jean Grae’s album, Cake or Death slated to drop this year, 2011 just may be “The Year of the Blacksmith”.

Two weeks ago I held a roundtable discussion with bloggers Karen Civil and B.Dot, and rappers Nina B., Lady Luck, and Rah Digga about the term “Femcee”. The overall consensus was “It’s Wack” and there is no need for the distinction. Coming off the heels of that conversation Nina B. whips up a track titled “You Know Who I Am” [off of DJ Kay Slay's latest mixtape, Redemption] and proves when a track is hot, gender really isn’t an issue.
