Before Brooklyn-born, Baltimore raised New York Knick Carmelo Anthony graced Madison Square Garden and Jay-Z broke ground for the new Barclays Center, LIU basketball has been holding it down for the borough of Brooklyn.
Established in the 1930′s the LIU mens’ basketball team has basically held down New York City. Winning the NIT tournament in 1939 and 1941 (when the NIT was bigger than the NCAA tournament) under legendary coach Clair Bee, the LIU squad was dominant. The 1935-36 team went 25-0. If it wasn’t for their boycott of the 1936 Summer Olympics as a protest of Nazi Germany, they were the commanding favorites to bring the gold medal back to the U.S.A.
Unfortunately, things got rougher for LIU in the years to come. In the early 50′s came the infamous CCNY point shaving scandal, that put a player in prison and suspended the athletic program from 1951 to 1957. Even though the men’s basketball team eventually was re-instated in the NCAA, it has fallen in the last two decades to St. Johns University, as the premier college basketball team in New York City.
In the late ’90′s the LIU basketball program had a momentary spike in their popularity when Brooklyn AAU and streetball legend Charles Jones was on their roster. The star of the basketball cult film “Soul in the Hole” was even able to parlay his success at LIU into a brief stint in the NBA. LIU was unable to use Jones’ popularity as a springboard for future high level recruits.
While St. John’s own personal issues has scarred its program recently, LIU has made a resurgence. As back to back champs of the Northeast Conference the LIU Blackbirds are now a force to be reckoned with. With their games now steadily televised on local New York City broadcasts and Spike Lee roaming the sidelines LIU is hopefully heading back to it’s true glory days.
Having played in the old Brooklyn Paramount Theatre where Ray Charles and Chubby Checker once performed, LIU epitomized old school Brooklyn. You can still get the old sense of Brooklyn at the LIU campus by walking across the street to Dekalb Ave. and grabbing a slice of cheesecake from the world reknowned Junior’s Restaurant before a game.
In 2010-11 the LIU Blackbirds finally went back to NCAA tournament for the first time in 14 years with my cousin and former team manager Efrain Jose Estrada playing the role of good luck charm.
So while they are still longshots to beat #1 ranked Michigan State tonight, you gotta root for them boys from BK. Their roots and heart have always been pure Brooklyn.
