Before playing ying to The Drama King’s yang I co-hosted alongside The Original Rootsman, Earl Chin on Rockers Radio. It was something of a pirated radio show where the Rootsman would play all classic reggae tunes and I discovered artists like Dennis Brown, Beres Hammond, and the late Gregory Isaacs. Regarded by many as the king of Lovers Rock, Isaacs was known for his smooth vocals and romantic lyrics best displayed on his hit record Night Nurse. While Isaacs was celebrated as a musician he was challenged by his drug addiction, he’s quoted saying “drugs are a debasing weapon. It was the greatest college ever, but the most expensive school fee ever paid – the Cocaine High School. I learnt everything, and now I’ve put it on the side.” Isaacs was able to turn his life around after his bout with drugs and experienced a successful music career that spans over 4 decades. His last album “Brand New Me” was released in 2008.

Isaacs passed away from cancer on October 25, 2010 in his London home.

“My Only Lover” was one of his biggest hits that later led him to gain international success.
